Mr Lucian Ion FRCS(Plast)

Consultant Plastic Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgeon
Director, Aesthetic Plastic Surgery

Training and career progression

Mr Lucian Ion An experienced aesthetic surgeon, Mr Ion trained in both Europe and the UK. He received his medical degree from the University of Bucharest and started his general and plastic surgical training in Paris where he studied in several prestigious hospitals.

He continued his training in Britain and passed the examinations to become a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS). His advanced training in plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery was completed in central London plastic surgery units covering all the aspects of the specialty. This training included a fellowship in aesthetic (cosmetic) surgery at The Wellington Hospital in London.

Once his training was complete, Mr Ion successfully passed both the Intercollegiate Board exam in plastic surgery and the European Board exam in the specialty, and was included on the Register of Medical Specialists of the General Medical Council, under the entry, plastic surgery.

In 2000 he was appointed to the position of Consultant Plastic Surgeon at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, where Mr Ion was actively involved in the multidisciplinary management of skin malignancies as well with general plastic surgery, reconstructive procedures and post-bariatric surgery body contouring. In July 2012 Mr Ion retired from NHS practice to dedicate his time to aesthetic surgery and associated treatments in full-time private practice.

The vision

In his clinical practice, Mr Ion always put forward as a foundation the notion that the work of plastic and aesthetic surgery is centred around each patient and their body image. He firmly believes that a result that is notionally beautiful but does not reflect the patient's own aesthetic vision fails to address the mission of our work.

His day-to-day focuses on engaging patients in the design of their treatment and after-care, to bring together available knowledge about safety and aesthetic changes into an experience that is both rewarding and seamless.

The research

As part of the development in aesthetic surgery and nonsurgical treatments, Mr Ion has been involved in research related to facial and neck rejuvenation. This has started with better understanding and description of the anatomy behind the shape of the neck and jaw line, to further the foundation of aesthetic treatments in this area.

This was continued into current research using 3-D imaging to evaluate the potential for a more customised approach to rejuvenation and sculpting of the face and neck, and a better understanding of the mathematical relationships of the change.

Another ongoing research is focused on the mechanisms behind reduction rhinoplasty, and the adjustment of the soft tissues of the nose to the smaller shape of the bridge and tip of the nose for improved outcomes.

As an extension between aesthetic and reconstructive treatments, he has been involved in developing the understanding of facial and breast asymmetry using 3-D photography, and its applications in facial sculpting and breast contouring. Mr Ion has been and is continuing to publish in peer-reviewed journals on subjects of aesthetic surgery.

Multidisciplinary work

Facial sculpting is an area of integration in knowledge and expertise about aesthetic principles, and intervention on the facial skeleton and soft tissues of the face and neck. It is also an area where discussion and collaboration with colleagues brings the strength of combining skills and expertise to the benefit of the patients.

For the last three years, Mr Ion has been involved with and hosting at the practice regular multidisciplinary facial sculpting clinics and extending this into multidisciplinary surgical interventions.

Conferences and teaching

Mr Ion is regularly lecturing in national and international meetings on topics related to aesthetic surgery treatments, and sharing his experience and vision of progress in this field for improved patient outcomes and satisfaction.

He is also regularly attending aesthetic surgery and medicine meetings to identify best practices from around the world and make them available for his patients.

Associations membership

Mr Ion is a member of the:

  • British Association of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS);
  • British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS),
  • British Burn Association.
  • International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery

His areas of interest include aesthetic surgery, face and neck lift and facial sculpting, rhinoplasty, breast surgery, and reconstruction of post-bariatric problems.

He is constantly developing the integration of surgical and nonsurgical techniques to improve results of aesthetic treatments. Mr Ion has been featured in television documentaries on aesthetic surgery on Discovery Health and Channel 5, and has appeared in print media on topics including facial surgery, rhinoplasty and adopting new technologies in clinical practice.
